DigitalSystem Adware

adware

Our research team came across DigitalSystem, a rogue application, during our examination of file submissions on the VirusTotal platform. Upon investigation, we determined that it belongs to the AdLoad malware family and operates as adware. DigitalSystem is primarily designed to conduct aggressive advertising campaigns and may possess additional harmful functionalities.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is capable of displaying third-party graphical content, such as overlays, banners, coupons, and pop-ups, on various interfaces, including websites and desktops.

For adware to function effectively, certain conditions may need to be met, such as using compatible browsers/systems or being in specific geographical locations or visiting particular websites. Nevertheless, the presence of DigitalSystem on a device poses threats to both system integrity and user safety.

Advertisements displayed by adware can promote online scams, unreliable software, or even malware. Some adware can execute scripts to clandestinely download or install additional malicious content when clicked.

It is important to note that any legitimate content presented through these advertisements is likely promoted by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to gain illegitimate commissions.

While we have observed many AdLoad applications with browser-hijacking features, our testing did not reveal such characteristics in the DigitalSystem application.

Furthermore, advertising-supported software typically collects sensitive information, and DigitalSystem may do the same. This targeted data could encompass visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, browser cookies, usernames, passwords, personally identifiable information, credit card numbers, and more. This vulnerable information may be monetized through sale to third parties.

What Are the Best Preventive Measures for an Adware-Free System?

To maintain an adware-free system, it's essential to implement various preventive measures. Here are some of the best practices:

Install Reputable Antivirus/Anti-Malware Software: Use trusted antivirus and anti-malware software to regularly scan your system for adware and other malicious programs. Keep the software updated to ensure it can detect and remove the latest threats.

Be Cautious When Downloading Software: Only download software from reputable sources, such as official websites or trusted app stores. Avoid downloading software from unknown or suspicious sources, as they may contain bundled adware.

Read User Reviews and Ratings: Before downloading any software or apps, read user reviews and ratings to check for any reported adware or suspicious behavior. Be wary of software with low ratings or negative reviews mentioning adware.

Customize Installation Settings: During software installation, always choose the custom or advanced installation option rather than the default settings. This allows you to review and deselect any optional components or bundled software, including adware.

Update Operating System and Software: Keep your operating system, web browsers, and other software up to date with the latest security patches and updates. Vulnerabilities in outdated software can be exploited by adware and other malware.

Use Ad Blockers: Install ad-blocking browser extensions or software to block intrusive advertisements and pop-ups while browsing the web. Ad blockers can help prevent adware from being displayed on websites.

Exercise Caution with Email Attachments and Links: Be cautious when opening email attachments or clicking on links, especially from unknown or suspicious senders. Adware can be distributed through malicious email attachments or phishing links.

Enable Firewall Protection: Use a firewall to monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic. A firewall can help block malicious connections and prevent adware from communicating with its servers.

By following these preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of encountering adware and maintain a clean and secure system.
