DesignationDrive Mac Adware

Our research team recently identified DesignationDrive, an adware-type application, during the analysis of new submissions to the VirusTotal platform. DesignationDrive belongs to the AdLoad malware family and is specifically designed to inundate users with unwanted and deceptive advertisements.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, displays various types of ads on different interfaces. These ads, including pop-ups, overlays, banners, surveys, and more, primarily promote online scams, untrustworthy or harmful software, and even malware. Some intrusive advertisements may execute scripts that initiate stealthy downloads or installations when clicked.

It is important to note that any legitimate products or services advertised through these ads are likely not endorsed by their actual developers or official parties. Scammers often exploit affiliate programs associated with the content to gain illegitimate commissions.

Adware applications typically require specific conditions to run intrusive ad campaigns, such as a compatible browser or system, user geolocation, or visits to particular websites. Regardless of whether DesignationDrive displays ads, its presence on a system poses a threat.

Furthermore, it is likely that this rogue app incorporates data-tracking capabilities. The targeted information may encompass visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, internet cookies, usernames, passwords, personally identifiable information, financial data, and more. The gathered data can be shared with or sold to third parties, potentially including cybercriminals.

How Can You Protect Your System Against Adware?

Protecting your system against adware requires a combination of preventive measures and proactive security practices. Here are some effective ways to safeguard your system from adware:

Use reputable security software: Install and regularly update reputable antivirus and anti-malware software on your system. These security tools can detect and block adware infections, as well as provide real-time protection against various malware threats.

Keep your operating system and software up to date: Regularly update your operating system, web browsers, plugins, and other software with the latest security patches and bug fixes. Adware often exploits vulnerabilities in outdated software, so keeping them up to date helps prevent potential infections.

Be cautious of software installations: Only download and install software from trusted and official sources. Be cautious of free software from unfamiliar websites, as they may bundle adware or potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) with their installers. Read the terms and conditions and opt-out of any additional bundled software during the installation process.

Pay attention to installation settings: When installing software, choose the custom or advanced installation option instead of the default settings. This allows you to review and deselect any optional or additional software that may be bundled with the intended program.

Avoid clicking on suspicious ads or links: Be cautious when clicking on ads, especially those that appear suspicious, misleading, or from untrustworthy sources. Avoid clicking on pop-up ads, banner ads, or links that seem too good to be true or prompt you to download software from unknown sources.

Enable pop-up blockers: Activate pop-up blockers in your web browser settings or install browser extensions that block intrusive pop-up ads. This helps prevent unwanted pop-ups that may contain adware or lead to malicious websites.
