ConnectionLocator Mac Adware
During our routine examination of new file submissions, our researchers came across the ConnectionLocator application. This particular software functions as adware and is worth noting as a component of the AdLoad malware group.
Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is developed with the aim of generating revenue for its creators by bombarding users with unwanted and misleading advertisements.
This software may require specific circumstances to initiate intrusive advertising campaigns, such as the need for compatible browser/system specifications or visits to particular websites. Nevertheless, even if the ConnectionLocator app doesn't visibly display ads, its presence on a system poses risks to both the device and the user's security.
Adware facilitates the insertion of various forms of advertisements, including pop-ups, overlays, coupons, surveys, etc., onto visited webpages and interfaces.
These advertisements typically endorse dubious online schemes, untrustworthy or dangerous software, and potential malware threats. In some instances, clicking on intrusive ads can trigger scripts that initiate downloads or installations without obtaining user consent.
It's important to note that although some legitimate products or services might be promoted through these ads, they are highly unlikely to be endorsed by their genuine developers or authorized entities. Instead, it's more plausible that such promotion is orchestrated by scammers who exploit affiliate programs to gain illicit commissions.
While AdLoad applications often come with browser-hijacking capabilities, our testing revealed that ConnectionLocator did not exhibit these functionalities.
This unauthorized application likely harvests sensitive user data, including visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, internet cookies, login credentials, personally identifiable information, credit card numbers, and more. The collected data can then be shared with or sold to third parties.
