Cityscapes is a browser extension that offers to display cityscape and urban skyline wallpapers in your browser. Our researchers came across this software during an investigation into deceptive websites. Upon analyzing Cityscapes, we discovered that it alters browser settings and promotes the schcm.com fake search engine, classifying it as a browser hijacker.
Cityscapes sets schcm.com as the homepage, default search engine, and URLs for new tabs and windows in browsers. Consequently, when this extension is installed, opening new browser tabs or entering search queries in the URL bar leads to redirects to the schcm.com site.
It's worth noting that browser-hijacking software often employs techniques to ensure its persistence, such as blocking access to removal-related settings or undoing changes made by the user, making its removal a more complex process.
Fake search engines typically lack the ability to provide genuine search results, so they redirect users to established search engines. At the time of our research, schcm.com redirected users to the Bing search engine (bing.com). However, it's important to keep in mind that this destination may vary, depending on factors like the user's location.
Furthermore, it is likely that Cityscapes engages in tracking users' browsing activities. The information of interest could encompass visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, internet cookies, usernames and passwords, personally identifiable information, financial data, and more. This collected data can then be monetized through sale to third parties.
