AdzEater Adware

ads adware pop-ups

Researchers have discovered the AdzEater browser extension that is presented as an adblocker for YouTube, but instead of blocking ads, it displays them. This makes it a form of advertising-supported software, also known as adware. Adware can display ads such as banners, pop-ups, coupons, surveys and more.

When clicked on some of these ads can perform downloads without user consent. The content promoted through these ads may not be endorsed by the actual developers, but rather by scammers taking advantage of their affiliate programs for illegitimate commissions.

AdzEater may require specific conditions such as compatible browsers or visits to certain sites in order to run advertisement campaigns. Even when it does not display any ads, its presence can still endanger device and user safety. It also has data-tracking abilities that allow it to collect information like browsing and search histories and personal details including usernames/passwords and credit card numbers which can then be shared with or sold to third-parties who may include cyber criminals.

Why Are Rogue Browser Extensions and Browser Hijackers a Potential Privacy Threat?

Rogue browser extensions and browser hijackers are a potential privacy threat because they can collect sensitive information about a user's browsing habits, such as their browsing and search histories, usernames/passwords, and personally identifiable details. The collected data can then be sold to third-parties who may include cyber criminals. This is especially concerning when malicious extensions are installed without the user's knowledge or consent. Additionally, many rogue browser extensions display intrusive ads (e.g., banners, pop-ups, coupons, surveys) that can lead users to malicious websites if clicked on.

How is Adware Similar to AdzEater Usually Distributed?

Adware and AdzEater are usually distributed through deceptive methods such as software bundling, i.e., hidden in other programs or applications. Users may not be aware that they are installing adware when downloading free software. It can also be spread via malicious websites, fake updates, email attachments, and peer-to-peer networks.
