AdvancedParameter Adware Targets Macs

mac malware

The AdvancedParameter app was identified by our research team during a routine investigation of new submissions to VirusTotal. After examining the app, we found that it is adware that belongs to the AdLoad malware family.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is programmed to exhibit ads on various interfaces. These ads can promote online scams, unreliable software, and even malware. In some instances, when a user clicks on intrusive ads, scripts can be executed to download/install software without the user's permission.

It's important to note that while some ads may display legitimate products or services, it is unlikely that they are being promoted by their actual developers. Scammers frequently exploit affiliate programs to earn illegitimate commissions by endorsing this type of content.

To run intrusive ad campaigns, adware often requires specific conditions such as a compatible browser or system, user geolocation, or visits to particular websites. However, even if the AdvancedParameter app does not display ads, its presence on a system could still pose a threat to device and user safety.

Additionally, AdLoad adware is typically equipped with browser hijacking capabilities, though we did not observe any while testing this rogue app.

It's highly probable that AdvancedParameter collects private information. Adware typically targets sensitive data, such as browsing and search engine histories, internet cookies, usernames and passwords, personally identifiable information, and credit card numbers. This information can be sold to or shared with third-party entities.

How is Adware Commonly Distributed?

Adware can be distributed through various channels, including freeware and shareware downloads, malicious email attachments, and software bundling. Some adware is also spread through fake or misleading online ads, often disguised as legitimate software updates or security alerts. Adware distributors may also use social engineering tactics to trick users into installing the software by making false promises of enhanced browsing experience or free downloads.

Once installed, adware can remain hidden on the system and may be difficult to remove. Therefore, it is important to be cautious when downloading and installing any software and to use reliable antivirus software to detect and remove potential adware infections.
