AdminLibrary Adware

Our team came across the rogue app AdminLibrary during the investigation of new file samples. Upon examination, we determined that this application falls under the category of adware and is associated with the AdLoad malware family. AdminLibrary functions by conducting intrusive advertising campaigns.

Adware, short for advertising-supported software, is crafted to generate revenue for its developers by delivering unwanted and misleading advertisements to users. This includes the display of third-party graphical content like pop-ups, overlays, banners, etc., on visited websites or other interfaces.

It's important to note that adware may not display intrusive ads under certain conditions, such as incompatible browsers/systems, specific sites not being visited, or other unsuitable circumstances. However, regardless of whether AdminLibrary exhibits ads, it poses a threat to the safety of the device and user.

The advertisements presented by this software predominantly endorse online scams, unreliable or harmful software, and potential malware. Some ads have the capability to execute scripts for stealthy downloads or installations upon being clicked.

It's crucial to be aware that any seemingly genuine content promoted through these ads is likely endorsed by scammers exploiting affiliate programs to gain illegitimate commissions.

While browser-hijacking functionalities are common among AdLoad applications, our analysis did not reveal these characteristics in AdminLibrary.

Furthermore, adware typically gathers sensitive user information, and AdminLibrary may possess data-tracking capabilities as well. The targeted information may encompass visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, and more. This data can then be sold to third parties.

How Can Adware Infiltrate Your Mac?

Adware can infiltrate your Mac through various methods, often by exploiting vulnerabilities or tricking users into installing malicious software. Here are common ways adware may find its way onto your Mac:

Bundled Software:
Adware may be bundled with seemingly legitimate software that you download and install. Users often overlook additional bundled software during the installation process, allowing adware to be installed inadvertently.

Fake Software Updates:
Cybercriminals may create fake software update notifications that prompt users to download and install updates. These updates may actually be adware disguised as legitimate software updates.

Malicious Websites:
Visiting compromised or malicious websites can expose your Mac to adware. Some websites may automatically download and install adware without the user's consent through techniques like drive-by downloads.

Deceptive Ads:
Clicking on deceptive ads, especially those promoting fake security software or claiming that your system is infected, can lead to the download and installation of adware on your Mac.

Phishing Emails:
Adware may be distributed through phishing emails that trick users into clicking on malicious links or downloading infected attachments. These emails often use social engineering tactics to create a sense of urgency.

Freeware or Shareware Downloads:
Downloading freeware or shareware from untrustworthy sources may expose your Mac to adware. Some free applications come bundled with adware, and users may unintentionally install it along with the desired software.

Browser Extensions and Plugins:
Adware can be delivered through malicious browser extensions or plugins. Users may unknowingly install these extensions, which then inject unwanted ads into the browsing experience.
