ActiveProtocol Mac Adware

Our researchers discovered the ActiveProtocol application while examining new file submissions. Following a detailed analysis of the program, it was established that this is adware connected to the AdLoad malware family.

Adware is basically software that displays intrusive commercials. These ads are generally related to online frauds, dangerous/untrustworthy programs and potential viruses. Clicking on the ads may result in silent downloads/installation of other applications. It is likely that any genuine services/products advertised are being promoted by scammers taking advantage of affiliate programs to generate unauthorized commissions.

ActiveProtocol may need certain conditions to show its intrusive ads, such as a compatible web browser or system, visits to specific websites etc. Even if this adware does not display advertisements, it can still be a hazard to the user's device and their privacy.

Moreover, AdLoad applications usually have traits of a browser hijacker, however, we did not find any such traits in ActiveProtocol during our investigation. It is also likely that this app can track data such as browsing history, passwords/usernames, cookies, personal information, credit card numbers etc. This collected information can then be sold to third parties for a financial gain.

How Can Adware Compromise Your Online Safety?

Adware is a type of potentially unwanted software that can be installed on your computer and used to gather information about you without your knowledge. It can also be used to redirect you to websites you didn't intend to visit, display pop-up ads, and even install additional forms of malware. By compromising your online safety, adware can put your personal data at risk, as well as exposing you to other malicious activities.

To protect yourself against adware, it's important to have up-to-date security software installed on your computer that can detect and remove any malicious programs. It's also a good idea to regularly check your system for any suspicious activity, such as pop-up ads or changes in browser settings. Additionally, avoid clicking on unfamiliar links or downloading files from unknown sources , as these can be used to install adware and other types of malware. Finally, be sure to regularly update your operating system with the latest security patches, as this will help protect your computer from any potential attacks.
