'MetaMask Holders Rewards' Scam
Cybercriminals and con artists are focusing heavily on exploiting members of the cryptocurrency communities. One of the popular browser-based cryptocurrency wallets, MetaMask, is a frequent target of such scams. One of the latest cons is the so-called 'MetaMask Holders Rewards' Scam. It is promoted through online pop-ups and alerts, as well as through messages on social media and Discord cryptocurrency communities. The scam says that users of MetaMask are entitled to winning a 0.25 Ethereum reward – because of being loyal to the wallet services.
The website is designed to look like the original MetaMask page, and many users might think it is legitimate. As you can probably already tell, MetaMask is not running such a reward program. This is a made up offer that cybercriminals use to trick users into performing certain actions.
What is the Goal of the 'MetaMask Holders Rewards' Scam?
The scammers ask users to connect their wallet to the site. When they attempt to do this, however, the page may try to hijack their wallet via several tricks – it might ask them to enter their secret recovery phrase in order to confirm their identity. This is something that the MetaMask service will never do unless you are trying to actively restore your account. Alternatively, the 'MetaMask Holders Rewards' Scam may also ask you to perform a transaction to confirm that you are an active member. However, the transaction it tells you to do will be sent to the wallet of the scammers, and you will never get your Ethereum back.
If you frequent cryptocurrency social media and communities, make sure to stay vigilant for scams. Members of these communities are hot targets for all sorts of scams right now, and it is up to you to protect your funds.
