Is McAfee WebAdvisor Safe?

McAfee WebAdvisor is a component of the McAfee antivirus software suite. It was previously known as SiteAdvisor, and it was meant to protect users from online scams and suspicious website. The user's browsing habits were monitored in real-time, and they saw a warning in case they were trying to visit a site related to scams or fraudulent behavior. The purpose of McAfee WebAdvisor is similar, but it also adds extra protection by warning users about phishing or identity theft scams and sites that the community deems as suspicious.

Why is McAfee WebAdvisor not Reliable?

McAfee WebAdvisor's usefulness has been subject to controversy for many years, ever since the add-on was first released. While the application sounds good on paper, the protection it offers may not be as great it sounds. One of the reasons for this is that cybercriminals are rapidly changing the websites they use to run scams or propagate malicious software – this happens on an hourly basis, and it is impossible to stay ahead of them. This means that if you try visiting a freshly compromised site, it would be impossible for McAfee WebAdvisor to give you a heads-up. A simple way to put it is that it is impossible for McAfee WebAdvisor to maintain an up-to-date databases – they would always be at least a few hours behind the most recent changes. In short, even if a page receives a green pass from McAfee WebAdvisor, it may still be dangerous.

Unfortunately, this is not the only drawback of using McAfee WebAdvisor. Users often complain that the application appears to hijack browser settings in order to promote 3rd-party search engines that users might not be interested in. On top of all this, many administrators and vendors have complained that their website is being falsely accused of being malicious by McAfee WebAdvisor.

While using McAfee WebAdvisor is certainly not dangerous, you should not think that it offers 100% guaranteed protection while online. Furthermore, if you are experiencing any of the secondary issues that users report, then it might be a good idea to uninstall McAfee WebAdvisor completely.

Last but not least, it is important to mention that online con artists are using the name of McAfee WebAdvisor in a wide range of scams. Basically, fake websites tell you that McAfee WebAdvisor has blocked specific content and ask you to download apps to examine the issue. Needless to say, McAfee's software is not affiliated with these scams.
