How to Stay Signed out of Gmail After Closing Google Chrome?

gmail stay signed out chrome

Google's Gmail is one of the hottest email services in the world. Google is a mega-corporation and its search engine is the most used on the planet so it's no surprise that their email service Gmail had over 1.2 billion active users in 2017, and likely more than that in 2018. That said, Gmail is not foolproof nor is it impregnable. Keeping your account signed in 24/7 can cause you some serious trouble.

Any time you log into your Gmail account the email will store your login credentials and keep you logged in even if you exit no matter what browser you're using. You don't even have to put a tick on the box that says "Stay signed in". It's nothing unusual, in fact, it's standard practice. Now, for some people being able to enter their email accounts right away without having to sign is quite convenient. For others (like me for example) it can be quite annoying. It's downright risky for your online security if you share a computer without other people like family members, roommates, or colleagues.

Maybe you just logged in into your private account at work or at your cousin's house, and you forgot to log out. Now, maybe someone will just log you out, but there's no guarantee. They could use your email to troll people or for something much, much worse. Millions of people become the victim of identity theft due to simple mistakes like this.

How to sign out of Gmail and stay signed out after closing Google Chrome.

  1. Launch your Chrome browser.
  2. Visit chrome://settings/content/cookies or simply click on "Settings" in Chrome and navigate to "Cookies".
  3. Find a box that says "Keep local data only until you quit your browser" and check it.
  4. Close and re-open the browser.

From now on, whenever you enter your Gmail account, you'll need to enter your username and password every time.

Gmail no longer able to set to automatically sign out upon closing browser, without it signing out of every other website I use. Is there a work around?
