'Your WhatsApp Has Expired Today' Scam
'Your WhatsApp Has Expired Today' Scam is a type of online scam, which seems to target both computer and mobile users. The goal of the con artists is to convince their potential victim that they are using an outdated version of the WhatsApp messaging app. Of course, they are aware that some users might not be concerned by this – this is why the scam is also accompanied by bogus alerts, which warn the victim that they could also lose their chats, contacts, and photos.
While experienced users will certainly nothing that these warnings are shady, non tech-savvy users might easily fall for it. The 'Your WhatsApp Has Expired Today' Scam Pop-Ups urge the user to download an update from the link included in the message.
The update, however, is likely to be a malicious file for Android or Windows. It could also turn out to be a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that causes all sorts of unexpected changes. Never trust random browser pop-ups warning you that one of your applications is out-of-date – especially if the warning is accompanied by alerts about loss of information. If you think that one of your programs might indeed be out-of-date, you should not fetch the update package from a random site. Instead, always use official sources.
