'Walmart Gift Card' Scam Offers Fake Rewards
A new scam is being pushed and advertised using misleading pages and rogue ads online. This time the theme of the scam is a Walmart gift card worth $1000.
Of course, like the dozens of similar scams, there is nothing to be won here. The websites that run the scam are highly misleading and are set up only to collect personal information from victims.
If you land on one of the domains that run the scam, you will see a pop-up in your browser that reads as follows:
Congratulations!
We would like to thank you for your loyalty, therefore we offer you a unique opportunity to get* a $1000 Walmart Gift Card this Black Friday!
Get started by choosing the right giftbox.
You have 3 attempts, good luck!
If the user clicks the "Get started" button in the pop-up and then clicks a gift box image on the screen, they will be taken to a new page that will tell them a gift card worth $1000 has been "reserved". Next, the victim will be prompted to enter their personal information so they can get the non-existent gift card.
This sort of scam will usually attempt to collect as much personal information as possible, using the fake expensive gift as a lure. Remember you should never provide your information on similar pages as stolen information may be used in a number of malicious and illegal ways, ranging from impersonation to fraud committed under your name.
