Steam Remote Play not Working

Steam Remote Play is a neat feature, which allows you to play co-op and multiplayer games with your friends over the Internet. The cool thing is that this works even if the game does not support online play – with Steam, this becomes possible. Furthermore, your friends do not need a copy of the game in order to join – you will be streaming the game to them, so they do not need to own it or have it installed. However, what do you do if Steam Remote Play is not working? Unfortunately, this issue has been troubling many users and troubleshooting it may not always be an easy task.

There could be multiple reasons why Steam Remote Play is not working. In some cases, users might be facing issues because they are using an outdated or a beta version of Steam. In other situations, specific network or router settings might be disabling Steam Remote Play's connectivity. Below, we will go over some of the most important troubleshooting steps to try out when Steam Remote Play is not working.

Apply Updates to Steam and the Game

Keeping your software up-to-date is strongly recommended if you want to minimize the chances of encountering random bugs and issues. To check if there are pending Steam updates, open the application and then click on Steam -> Check for Steam Client Updates. Typically, games will update automatically as soon as you start them, so there is no need to apply updates manually

To make sure that the game is set to update automatically, right-click its name in the Steam Library and select Properties -> Updates. Make sure that the option Always keep this game updated is selected.

Opt out of the Steam Beta

If you are curious to be the first to find out about new Steam features, then you might have opted to use the beta variant. However, keep in mind that the beta client is likely to cause problems more often than the stable version. Try to stop using the beta to fix the Steam Remote Play not working issue.

Open Steam -> Settings -> Account and then click Change on the Beta Participation section at the bottom. Make sure to Opt out of all beta programs and click OK.

Restart Remote Play

Turning it off and on again is a classic fix for all sorts of PC-related issues. Remote Play is no exception. Go to Steam -> Settings -> Remote Play. Remove the checkmark next to Enable Remote Play, confirm the changes, and restart your PC. After the restart is done, get back to the same menu, but this time opt to Enable Remote Play.

Stop Hardware Decoding

Some Steam users report that turning off this feature helped them fix the Steam Remote Play not working issue. Go to Steam -> Settings -> Remote Play. Select Advanced Client Options and turn off Enable Hardware Decoding.
