Worldwide Clock Extension Rogue Browser Extension

web browser hijacker

Our research team recently discovered the Worldwide Clock Extension, a browser extension that claims to display clocks from user-selected timezones on the homepage. After further inspection, it was determined that this extension is actually a browser hijacker promoting the search.worldwideclockextension.com fake search engine.

Upon installation of Worldwide Clock Extension onto our test machine, we noticed that it had changed the default search engine, new tab/window and homepage URLs to its own website. This type of hijacker often uses various methods to ensure persistence and prevent recovery of the browser settings.

Whenever we opened a new tab or window or entered a query into the URL bar, it resulted in redirects to search.worldwideclockextension.com. Fake search engines usually cannot generate their own results so they redirect users to legitimate ones; at the time of our research, this site redirected us to Bing (bing.com). However, this could change depending on various factors such as user geolocation etc.

It is important to be aware of browser hijackers like Worldwide Clock Extension as they can cause unwanted redirects and other issues. It is recommended to remove this extension from your browser as soon as possible in order to protect your system from potential harm.
