What Does The WebSurf Guard Rogue Browser Extension Do?

browser hijacker popups ads

WebSurf Guard is a rogue browser extension for the Chrome browser. It is advertised as a YouTube and general-purpose ad blocker, but in reality, it functions as adware.

The extension asks for permission to read and change data on all pages you browse, supposedly so it can block "harmful elements". Instead, the rogue extension itself can cause ads to display. Those ads may be sourced using unsafe, rogue ad networks and can link to questionable online locations.

The extension's page on the Chrome web store claims that upon installing it, the user agrees to the "privacy policy and terms of use". Sadly, the same privacy policy and terms of use are not linked anywhere on the page. The Chrome web store page contains no link to an official site or developer page for the extension as well, so it's anybody's guess what the user is agreeing to upon installing the extension.

WebSurf Guard may show ads that lead to dubious websites. These sites could be operated by scammers hoping to get users' personal information, give unauthorized access to computers, spread malicious software, and so forth. Furthermore, WebSurf Guard might track users in order to obtain data which may then be exploited for advertising, sold to third parties, or used to make money. Therefore, it is highly recommended that users do not rely on WebSurf Guard.
