Vvwq Ransomware Expands Djvu Family of Variants

This week brings yet another ransomware variant that belongs to the wider Djvu ransomware clone family. The latest addition is named the Vvwq ransomware.

The Vvwq ransomware will encrypt files on the victim system, leaving very few intact, primarily those belonging to the OS and needed for its functioning. Documents, archives, media files and databases will be encrypted and rendered unreadable.

Once encrypted, files receive the ".vvwq" extension, which gets appended after the original one. This will make a file formerly named "archive.zip" transform into "archive.zip.vvwq" once it has been encrypted.

Ransom demands are placed inside a plain text file named "_readme.txt". There is nothing new to the ransom note, it follows the same format and ransom amount used in all recent clones based on Djvu.
