What is Vvmm Ransomware?
We ran into Vvmm while going over samples submitted to online threat analysis databases.
It is a ransomware variant that belongs to the Djvu family and encrypts data, appending the ".vvmm" extension to filenames of the encrypted files. It also creates a ransom note ("_readme.txt" file). An example of how it works is changing "1.jpg" to "1.jpg.vvmm", "2.png" to "2.png.vvmm", and so on.
The attackers demand payment for decryption software and a unique key in order for victims to regain access to their files, offering a discounted rate of $490 if they contact them via email within 72 hours, otherwise they must pay the full price of $980.
The ransom note provides two email addresses for victims to reach out to them with their inquiries and also states that victims can send a single file without any valuable information and receive it back decrypted as proof that the attackers are able to decrypt files successfully.
All of this is par for the course with every recent Djvu variant.

Why should you never pay ransom demands made by ransomware threat actors?
You should never pay ransom demands made by ransomware threat actors because it encourages them to continue their malicious activities. Paying the ransom does not guarantee that you will get your files back, and even if you do, there is no guarantee that the attackers will not target you again in the future. Additionally, paying ransoms may fund other criminal activities such as money laundering or terrorism. Finally, paying ransoms can also put other people at risk since the attackers may use the funds to develop more sophisticated malware and attack more victims.
