Remove TOR Ransomware

The TOR Ransomware is a file-encryption Trojan, which can cause long-lasting damage to your important files. It uses a complicated mechanism to encrypt the contents of files and then asks you to purchase a decryption tool. However, there is no reason to believe TOR Ransomware's creators – even if you end up paying, they may not give you anything in return. The TOR Ransomware is part of the Dharma Ransomware family, and, unfortunately, there is no free decryption tool available.

Staying safe from the TOR Ransomware attack is not as difficult as you may think. It is recommended to use an up-to-date anti-malware application, as well as to be careful with the types of content you browse. Stop downloading files from non-trustworthy sources, and never interact with pirated content. Last but not least, be careful when working email attachments if the sender is not verified – email spam is the #1 method to propagate ransomware threats like this one. Another Dharma variant similar to TOR is the OFF Ransomware.

What happens if the TOR Ransomware attacks?

When this file-locker corrupts a computer, it will immediately encrypt a large portion of the files. It targets a wide range of file types. After encrypting a file, it will add a suffix to its name – '.id-<VICTIM ID>.[todecrypt@disroot.org].TOR.' On top of all this, the TOR Ransomware will also disable the System Restore Service and delete Shadow Volume Copies – this reduces the victim's data recovery options. Finally, it drops the 'FILES ENCRYPTED.txt' ransom note.

TOR Ransomware Ransom Note

The message asks victims to contact todecrypt@disroot.org or todecrypt@onionmail.org for assistance. We advise you to ignore the offer of the criminals, because you may end up scammed if you try to co-operate with them.

Our advice to victims of this ransomware is to use an up-to-date malware removal tool to eliminate the infection. After this, they will need to try out alternative file recovery options in order to recover their data. Unfortunately, the only guaranteed way to recover the lost files is to restore them from a backup.
