"This Update Requires an Action" Pop-up on Mac

Unfortunate Mac users may have run into an annoying pop-up window in their Safari browser that reads "This Update Requires an Action". The best course of action in this case is not to click anything on the fake warning message and clean your computer from the adware that is associated with the "This Update Requires an Action" pop-up notification.

Security researchers have found that the "This Update Requires an Action" pop-up you may see in your browser is linked with additional potentially unwanted applications such as ChillTab and TapuFind.

Potentially unwanted applications do not imply the same threat level to your system that viruses or ransomware exhibit but they are still, as the name suggests, unwanted software that will generally diminish your user experience and may lead to the installation of further malware.

There are a number of potentially unwanted applications that may be causing the same "This Update Requires an Action" message to appear. Those include DisplayUpdate, LightAgent and PowerLog, to name a few. This is not the full list of adware that will bring up the notification.

This sort of application cannot perform any of the supposedly beneficial features it offers and is just a means of generating money for its authors, usually through scaring the user into paying for the product or through nagging with messages similar to "This Update Requires An Action".

You will usually find a PUA extension already installed in your browser's extensions tab if you are already seeing the "This Update Requires an Action" pop-ups. You may also find that your browser becomes unresponsive and the notification pop-up blocks you from switching tabs and generally using your browser.

The usual way potentially unwanted applications such as the ones that cause the "This Update Requires an Action" pop-up is through bundle installers. In a lot of cases, free download sites may offer bundle installers for a certain application, but there might be a potentially unwanted app that is bundled in the same package. Usually, the PUA will install without explicit user consent, at least when the default "express install" option is chosen.

Using reliable sources for your software such as official developer websites and the app store is one way to avoid potentially unwanted apps from bundlers getting on your system. Additionally, checking the custom install option and manually opting out of any additional software contained in the bundler is also a solution.
