SearchMe Rogue Extension

web browser hijacker search

While examining the SearchMe Extension application, we uncovered its function as a browser hijacker. Upon installation, it alters browser settings to promote a specific web address and may also collect various types of information.

The SearchMe Extension compels users to visit search-me-ext.com whenever they open a browser or a new tab and perform searches. To achieve this, it configures search-me-ext.com as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab page in the hijacked browser's settings.

When users input a search query, search-me-ext.com redirects them to bing.com, indicating that Bing, a legitimate search engine, provides the search results instead of search-me-ext.com. Consequently, search-me-ext.com is classified as a counterfeit search engine.

Fake search engines lack reliability for several reasons. Firstly, they often employ deceptive tactics to resemble legitimate search engines, misleading users into using their services. Secondly, these fake search engines may prioritize displaying sponsored or malicious content in search results, compromising the relevance and trustworthiness of the information provided.

Moreover, fake search engines may unlawfully gather user data, posing privacy risks to users without their consent.

What Are Rogue Browser Extensions?

Rogue browser extensions are add-ons or plugins for web browsers that engage in deceptive, malicious, or unwanted activities without the user's consent or knowledge. These extensions typically offer seemingly useful features or functionalities but may behave in ways that compromise user privacy, security, or browsing experience. Here are some common characteristics and behaviors of rogue browser extensions:

Unauthorized Data Collection: Rogue browser extensions may collect user data, such as browsing history, search queries, and personal information, without the user's explicit consent. This data can be used for targeted advertising, sold to third parties, or even stolen by malicious actors.

Browser Hijacking: Rogue extensions may hijack browser settings, such as the default search engine, homepage, or new tab page, and replace them with their own preferences. This can redirect users to malicious websites or unwanted content.

Ad Injection: Some rogue extensions inject unwanted advertisements, pop-ups, or banners into web pages visited by the user, disrupting the browsing experience and potentially exposing users to scams or malware.

Phishing and Scams: Rogue extensions may engage in phishing activities by tricking users into entering sensitive information, such as login credentials or financial details, on fraudulent websites. They may also promote scams or deceptive offers to unsuspecting users.

Malware Distribution: In some cases, rogue browser extensions may serve as vehicles for distributing malware or other malicious software to users' devices. This can lead to system infections, data breaches, or other security vulnerabilities.
