SampleScheduler Mac Adware is an AdLoad Clone

While examining new file submissions, our research team discovered the SampleScheduler application. After a thorough evaluation, we concluded that it is adware associated with the AdLoad malware family.

Adware, which stands for advertising-supported software, operates by launching intrusive advertising campaigns that display ads across various interfaces. These advertisements, such as pop-ups, overlays, coupons, banners, and more, often promote online scams, untrustworthy software, and even malware. Some intrusive ads have the capability to initiate stealthy downloads or installations when clicked on.

It is important to note that while legitimate products and services may occasionally appear in these ads, they are unlikely to have the endorsement of their genuine developers or creators. More likely, scammers exploit the affiliate programs of such content to gain illegitimate commissions.

Advertising-supported software may require specific conditions to execute intrusive ad campaigns, such as compatible browsers or systems and visits to certain websites. Even if SampleScheduler does not currently display ads, its mere presence poses a threat to the safety of both the user and the device.

Furthermore, AdLoad adware often possesses browser-hijacking capabilities, although we did not observe such behavior during our testing of SampleScheduler.

Moreover, this malicious application is likely to collect sensitive information. Data of interest may encompass visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, internet cookies, usernames, passwords, personally identifiable details, financial information, and more. The collected data can be shared with or sold to third parties, posing significant privacy concerns.

How Can Adware Like SampleScheduler Get Inside Your Mac?

Adware like SampleScheduler can find its way onto your Mac through various means. Here are some common ways adware can infect your system:

• Software Bundling: Adware often piggybacks on legitimate software installers or bundled downloads. When you install a program from an untrusted source or neglect to read the installation prompts carefully, additional adware may be included in the package and installed without your knowledge.
• Fake Software Updates: Scammers may create fake pop-up notifications or websites that resemble legitimate software update prompts. When you click on these deceptive notifications or download updates from untrusted sources, adware can be inadvertently installed on your Mac.
• Malicious Websites and Downloads: Visiting compromised or malicious websites, particularly those hosting pirated content or illegal downloads, can expose your Mac to adware. Clicking on suspicious links or downloading files from untrusted sources can initiate adware installation.
