'Request To Delete Your Email' Scam Phishes for Login Credentials

Upon conducting an examination of the email named "Request To Delete Your Email," we have determined that it is a spam message. This deceptive email falsely claims that the recipient's mail account is at risk of being terminated and prompts them to click on a website link to prevent this from happening. However, this website is a phishing site that targets the victim's account log-in credentials.

The scam email, which may have a subject line of "Web Server Cancellation Request Received," informs the recipient that a request to delete their email account has been received. If the recipient did not make this request, they are instructed to click on "Cancel Request" immediately. The email is signed off with "Microsoft Corporation" to create a sense of legitimacy, but this email is, in fact, a fake and should be disregarded as it is not associated with any legitimate entities.

Upon clicking the link in this email, we were directed to a phishing website that appears to be an email account sign-in page. Any credentials entered into this webpage, such as email address and password, will be compromised and disclosed to cybercriminals. This may lead to cybercriminals gaining access to the contents of the email account, as well as the social media or networking accounts associated with it. Cybercriminals can then potentially use the victim's identity to scam others or distribute malware through sharing malicious links and files.

What Are the Top Three Signs that an Unsolicited Email is a Scam?

Unsolicited emails can be a breeding ground for scams. Here are three signs that an unsolicited email may be a scam:

  • Suspicious sender: The email sender's address may not match the purported company or organization they claim to represent. The sender's email address may include a variation of the company name or contain additional characters, making it look similar but not identical to the real one.
  • Urgency or fear tactics: The email may use fear tactics or create a sense of urgency to get the recipient to take immediate action. They may threaten legal action, account suspension, or loss of access to services if the recipient does not respond or provide personal information.
  • Request for personal information: The email may ask for personal information such as passwords, credit card numbers, social security numbers, or other sensitive data. Legitimate companies or organizations will not request personal information via email or ask you to click on links to update your account details.
