Qwik Search Hijacks Browser Settings

browser hijacker

While examining suspicious websites, our team discovered the Qwik Search browser extension, which claims to enhance online search experiences by providing easy access to popular search engines. However, after analyzing the extension, we found that it is a browser hijacker. Qwik Search modifies browser settings, replacing the homepage, default search engine, and new tab or window URL with the fake search engine search.qwik-search.com.

Once installed, Qwik Search forces users to use search.qwik-search.com for their searches, which redirects to Bing.com as fake search engines are typically unable to produce results. It is important to note that the redirection may vary depending on user geolocation and other factors.

Additionally, browser hijackers like Qwik Search often use methods to persist and prevent users from recovering their browsers.

Moreover, Qwik Search likely monitors user browsing activity. Browser hijackers typically collect URLs, webpages visited, search queries, personal information, and financial details. The collected data can be sold or shared with third parties, posing a significant privacy risk.

What Are Some of the Signs You Have a Browser Hijacker on Your System?

There are several signs that you may have a browser hijacker on your system, including:

Changes to your browser settings: If your homepage, default search engine, or new tab/window URL has been changed without your permission, it may be a sign of a browser hijacker.

Unwanted pop-ups and redirects: If you are experiencing a lot of pop-ups or being redirected to unfamiliar websites, it could be a sign of a browser hijacker.

Slow performance: If your browser is running slower than usual or taking longer to load pages, it could be due to a browser hijacker.

Unknown toolbars and extensions: If you notice new toolbars or extensions in your browser that you don't remember installing, it could be a sign of a browser hijacker.

Suspicious search results: If your search results are not relevant to your query or include a lot of sponsored links, it could be a sign of a browser hijacker.

If you notice any of these signs, it's important to take action to remove the browser hijacker from your system as soon as possible to protect your privacy and prevent further damage.
