Nzqw Ransomware Encrypts Victims' Files

During the analysis of malicious software samples, our team came across the Nzqw ransomware, which is a member of the Djvu malware family. Upon compromising a computer, Nzqw encrypts a variety of files and appends the ".nzqw" extension to their original file names. For example, a file previously called "1.jpg" would be changed to "1.jpg.nzqw", and "2.png" would be altered to "2.png.nzqw", and so forth.

Apart from file encryption, Nzqw also generates a ransom note found as a text file named "_readme.txt". Furthermore, the distribution of Nzqw might involve collaboration with other malware such as Vidar and RedLine, which are focused on stealing information. The ransom note contained within the "_readme.txt" file highlights that the decryption process relies on specialized decryption software and a unique key. The recipients of this note are directed to get in touch with the attackers via provided email addresses (support@freshmail.top or datarestorehelp@airmail.cc) to receive additional instructions.

Additionally, the ransom note presents two different amounts, specifically $980 and $490, implying that victims might be able to obtain the decryption tools at a discounted rate if they establish contact with the attackers within a 72-hour window.

How Can Ransomware Infect Your System?

Ransomware can infect your system through various methods, often exploiting vulnerabilities or human actions. Here are some common ways ransomware can infect a system:

  • Email Attachments: Cybercriminals may send malicious emails containing infected attachments. When users open these attachments, the ransomware is executed and starts encrypting files on the system.
  • Phishing Links: Ransomware can be delivered through phishing emails with links to malicious websites. Clicking on these links can lead to the download and execution of ransomware.
  • Malicious Downloads: Downloading files or software from untrustworthy sources, such as cracked software or unofficial websites, can introduce ransomware to your system.
  • Exploit Kits: Exploit kits target vulnerabilities in software applications or operating systems. If your system isn't up-to-date with the latest security patches, ransomware can be delivered through these vulnerabilities.
  • Malvertising: Malicious advertisements, or malvertisements, can contain code that triggers ransomware downloads when clicked. These ads can appear on legitimate websites.
  • Drive-by Downloads: Visiting compromised websites can lead to "drive-by" downloads, where malicious code is silently downloaded and executed on your system.
  • USB Drives and External Devices: Infected external devices like USB drives can spread ransomware if connected to your system. Auto-run features on these devices can execute the ransomware upon connection.
  • Malicious Macros: Ransomware can be embedded in documents that contain malicious macros. When users enable macros, the ransomware is executed.
