New Tab Nature Rogue Browser Extension
During our investigation into unreliable websites, our researchers stumbled upon the New Tab Nature browser extension. This software boasts the capability to showcase nature-themed browser wallpapers. However, upon close analysis, we identified it as a browser hijacker. The New Tab Nature extension manipulates browser settings to induce redirects.
This category of software, known as browser hijackers, alters default search engines, homepages, and new tab/window URLs in browsers, directing users to promoted websites. Consequently, each time a new browser tab/window is opened or a search is typed into the address bar, the user is redirected to the endorsed website.
New Tab Nature employs these manipulations in browsers as well. Notably, browser hijackers often employ techniques to ensure persistence, making their removal complex and obstructing users from restoring their browser settings.
Typically, browser-hijacking software promotes counterfeit search engines that fail to deliver legitimate search results, instead rerouting users to legitimate internet search platforms. However, during our investigation, we observed that New Tab Nature exclusively redirected users to the authentic Google search engine (google.com).
Furthermore, it is highly likely that New Tab Nature possesses data-tracking functionalities. The information targeted may encompass visited URLs, viewed webpages, entered search queries, internet cookies, login credentials, personally identifiable details, financial data, and more. This gathered data can be monetized through sale to third parties or misused for profit-driven purposes.
What Are Rogue Browser Extensions?
Rogue browser extensions, also known as potentially unwanted browser extensions, are software add-ons or plugins that appear to provide useful features or functions for your web browser but actually have malicious intent. These extensions can compromise your online security, privacy, and overall browsing experience. They are typically designed to perform harmful actions without your knowledge or consent. Here are some key characteristics and dangers associated with rogue browser extensions:
Unauthorized Actions: Rogue extensions can perform actions without your permission, such as changing your default search engine, redirecting you to malicious websites, modifying your browser settings, or injecting unwanted advertisements.
