Foxy Tab Rogue Browser Extension

pop-ups notifications

The Foxy Tab browser extension claims to offer custom browser wallpapers, but upon examination, we found that it functions as a browser hijacker. This extension alters browser settings to promote the fake search engine logic.hortbizcom.com through redirects. Browser hijackers change the default search engines, homepages, and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of the sites they promote. Foxy Tab is no exception – it modifies these settings, causing new tabs/windows and search queries to be redirected to the logic.hortbizcom.com page.

Browser hijackers often use techniques to make removal difficult and prevent users from restoring their browser settings. Illegitimate search engines typically don't provide valid search results, so they redirect users to genuine search sites. During our research, we observed that logic.hortbizcom.com redirected users to the Bing search engine (bing.com). However, the redirection destination might vary based on factors like user geolocation.

In addition, Foxy Tab possesses the capability to track user data. This could include browsing and search histories, frequently visited URLs, Internet cookies, login credentials, personal information, financial data, and more. The collected data could be sold to third parties for monetization purposes.

What Are Rogue Browser Extensions?

Rogue browser extensions are malicious or unauthorized browser extensions/add-ons that are designed to deceive or harm users. These extensions often disguise themselves as helpful or legitimate tools, but their true purpose is to engage in harmful activities, such as stealing personal information, injecting ads, redirecting users to unwanted websites, modifying browser settings, or even spreading malware.

Here are some key characteristics of rogue browser extensions:

Deception: Rogue extensions may appear to offer useful features or functionalities, enticing users to install them. They might promise features like enhanced browsing experience, improved search results, or customization options.

Unauthorized Activities: Once installed, these extensions perform activities that users did not explicitly agree to. This could include altering browser settings, redirecting web traffic, or collecting user data without consent.

Malicious Intent: Rogue extensions often engage in activities that compromise user security and privacy. They might steal sensitive information, such as login credentials, credit card details, or personal identification.

Unwanted Behavior: These extensions might change default search engines, homepage URLs, or new tab settings without the user's permission. They could also inject unwanted ads into websites, leading to a disruptive browsing experience.

Persistence: Rogue extensions may use techniques to resist removal, making it difficult for users to uninstall them from their browsers.

Unauthorized Data Collection: Some rogue extensions track users' online activities, including browsing habits and search history, without users' knowledge or consent. This information could be used for targeted advertising or sold to third parties.
