Llqq Ransomware
Researchers report on a newly discovered strain of file-encrypting malware. The new threat is named the Llqq ransomware, after the extension appended to encrypted files.
Llqq belongs to the massive family of Djvu ransomware strains. New versions and Djvu spinoffs appear every few days, with no end in sight.
The ransomware encrypts popular file types and makes them unusable. The encrypted files receive a new extension, appended after their old one. A file called "nature.jpg" will transform into "nature.jpg.llqq" once it has been encrypted by the ransomware. Llqq will encrypt most media, document and archive file types, making it a significant threat.
The ransomware asks for $490 in ransom payment within the first 72 hours after infection. That sum is increased to $980 after this window. The ransom note is dropped in a plain text file named "_readme.txt".
