Hkgt Ransomware
The Hkgt ransomware is one of the dozens of Djvu ransomware variants that have sprouted up in the last few weeks.
The ransomware does everything you would expect it to do, just like its clones. It encrypts media, archive and document file types, leaving them scrambled and useless. Once encryption completes, the ransomware appends a new extension to files, adding ".hkgt". This means that a file formerly named "waterfall.jpg" will transform into "waterfall.jpg.hkgt" once it is encrypted.
The ransom note is dropped inside a file called "_readme.txt" and contains the same template used by other recent Djvu clones. The initial ransom demand is $490, and that turns into $980 if the ransom is not paid within 72 hours. Of course, paying the ransom is never advisable, as you have no guarantees you will receive a working decryption tool.
