FormatDash Adware is an AdLoad Variant
While conducting a routine assessment of fresh submissions, our researchers came across the FormatDash application. A comprehensive analysis of this software revealed its affiliation with the AdLoad malware family, categorizing it as adware. The primary purpose of FormatDash is to generate profits for its creators by initiating intrusive advertising campaigns.
Adware, short for advertising-supported software, serves as a platform for introducing third-party graphical content, encompassing elements like pop-ups, coupons, banners, surveys, and overlays, to diverse interfaces.
These advertisements often endorse questionable online activities, unreliable software, and potentially harmful malware. Certain intrusive ads, when interacted with, can even execute scripts that facilitate downloads or installations without seeking user consent.
However, it's imperative to remember that even if adware-displayed ads might occasionally feature legitimate products and services, these are unlikely to be endorsed by their official developers or associated parties. More often than not, the promotion stems from fraudulent sources exploiting content's affiliate programs to gain illicit financial benefits.
The operation of advertising-supported software typically requires specific prerequisites to deploy intrusive ad campaigns. These conditions could involve a compatible browser or system, user geolocation, visits to designated websites, and more. Regardless of whether FormatDash actively presents advertisements, the mere presence of this application on a device poses a potential threat.
While AdLoad adware frequently exhibits browser hijacking attributes, it's noteworthy that FormatDash did not demonstrate such characteristics during our testing phase.
