Forest New Tab Browser Extension

browser hijacker

The Forest New Tab extension claims to offer forest-themed browser wallpapers, but upon examination, we identified it as a browser hijacker. Forest New Tab alters browser settings to promote the illegitimate search engine ysrc2u.com through redirects.

Browser hijackers typically modify browser settings, including homepages, default search engines, and new tab/window URLs, redirecting them to specific promoted websites. Therefore, with Forest New Tab installed, opening new browser tabs/windows and conducting search queries in the URL bar will result in redirection to the ysrc2u.com webpage.

These fake search engines often do not provide genuine search results, so they redirect users to legitimate internet search websites. During our research, ysrc2u.com redirected to Bing (bing.com), but this destination could vary based on factors like user location.

In many instances, browser-hijacking software employs techniques to ensure its persistence, making it challenging to remove and preventing users from restoring their browsers to their desired settings.

Additionally, software falling under this category typically possesses data-tracking capabilities, and Forest New Tab may have such functionality as well.

The information targeted for collection may encompass browsing and search engine histories, internet cookies, login credentials, personally identifiable information, financial data, and more. This collected data can be sold to third parties or exploited for profit in various ways.

What Are Rogue Browser Extensions?

Rogue browser extensions, also known as malicious or rogue browser add-ons, are browser extensions or plugins that have been designed with malicious intent. These extensions are created to carry out harmful activities or engage in unethical practices, often without the user's knowledge or consent. Here are some key characteristics and activities associated with rogue browser extensions:

  • Malicious Intent: Rogue browser extensions are developed with harmful purposes, such as delivering malware, stealing sensitive information, promoting scams, or engaging in fraudulent activities.
  • Deceptive Installation: Rogue extensions often use deceptive tactics to get installed on users' browsers. They may be bundled with legitimate software, advertised as helpful tools, or distributed through misleading websites.
  • Unauthorized Modifications: Once installed, rogue extensions can make unauthorized changes to the user's browser settings. This can include altering the homepage, default search engine, and new tab behavior without the user's consent.
  • Intrusive Ads: Many rogue extensions inject intrusive and unwanted advertisements into the user's browsing experience. These ads can be in the form of pop-ups, banners, in-text ads, and even video ads.
  • Data Collection: Rogue extensions may collect user data without permission. This can include browsing history, search queries, login credentials, personal information, and more. This collected data is often exploited for malicious purposes.
  • Phishing and Scams: Some rogue extensions are involved in phishing attacks, redirecting users to fake websites designed to steal login credentials or financial information. They may also promote various online scams.
  • Browser Hijacking: Rogue extensions can hijack the user's browser, making it difficult for them to change settings or return to a normal browsing experience. They may redirect users to specific websites or search engines against their will.
