Fofd Ransomware Joins Djvu Clone Family To Encrypt Files
Our research team discovered Fofd, a ransomware belonging to the Djvu family, during the review of recently discovered malware samples. Fofd encrypts files on the victim's computer and demands a ransom payment in exchange for the decryption tools. It's worth noting that Fofd might come bundled with other malware like RedLine or Vidar.
When Fofd infects a computer, it appends a ".fofd" extension to every encrypted file's name. For instance, "1.jpg" will be renamed to "1.jpg.fofd," and "2.png" will become "2.png.fofd." Additionally, Fofd generates a ransom note called "_readme.txt." This note instructs the victims on how to contact the attackers and pay the ransom.
The ransom amount ranges from $490 to $980, depending on whether the victim contacts the attackers before or after 72 hours. Moreover, the ransom note offers the possibility of decrypting one file for free, provided that it does not contain valuable information. Before purchasing decryption tools, victims can send one encrypted file to one of the provided email addresses to test the legitimacy of the attackers. The note provides further instructions on how to contact the attackers through either support@freshmail.top or datarestorehelp@airmail.cc to receive guidance on purchasing the decryption software and key.

How Can Ransomware Like Fofd Infect Your System?
Ransomware like Fofd can infect your system through various methods. One common way is through phishing emails containing malicious links or attachments that, when clicked, download the ransomware onto your computer. Another method is through exploit kits that take advantage of vulnerabilities in software, operating systems, or network devices, allowing the ransomware to enter and spread throughout the network. Additionally, ransomware can be delivered through social engineering tactics, such as fake software updates or browser pop-ups that trick users into downloading and executing malicious code.
Ransomware can also be spread through infected websites, unsecured file-sharing networks, and through the use of compromised remote desktop protocol (RDP) connections. It's essential to take steps to protect your system against ransomware, such as keeping software and operating systems up to date, avoiding suspicious links and downloads, and maintaining strong security measures like firewalls, antivirus, and regular data backups.
