Dark Power Ransomware Expects Ransom in Monero Cryptocurrency

Dark Power is a type of ransomware that uses encryption to prevent victims from accessing their files. It also alters the filenames by appending the ".dark_power" extension and creates a ransom note in the form of a "readme.pdf" file. For example, if the original file name was "1.jpg", Dark Power would rename it as "1.jpg.dark_power".

The ransom note contains a warning that the victim's files have been encrypted and are not available. It also claims that all files, including backups, Outlook servers, and databases, have been encrypted, but the data can be recovered by following the instructions provided. The attackers demand a ransom of $10,000 to be paid in XMR cryptocurrency to a specified address.

The note further instructs victims to download qTox chat and create a new chat to communicate with the attackers. They warn that any attempts to recover the files using third-party software or antivirus solutions could result in permanent data loss. The attackers also threaten to publish the victim's data if they do not cooperate and follow the instructions provided.

Why Is it Never a Good Idea to Pay Ransom to Hackers Similar to Those Operating Dark Power?

It is never a good idea to pay a ransom to hackers similar to those operating Dark Power for several reasons:

Payment does not guarantee data recovery: There is no guarantee that paying the ransom will result in the recovery of encrypted data. The attackers may simply take the money and not provide the decryption key or provide a faulty key that does not unlock the files.

Encourages more attacks: Paying the ransom encourages attackers to continue their illegal activities and target more victims. It also funds their operations and motivates them to create new and more sophisticated ransomware attacks.

Increases the risk of future attacks: Paying the ransom puts a target on the victim's back, making them more susceptible to future attacks. Attackers may see them as an easy target and continue to target them for further extortion.

Illegal and unethical: Paying the ransom supports criminal activity, and it is not a sustainable or ethical solution to the problem of ransomware attacks.

May expose victims to additional risks: By providing payment information, victims may expose themselves to additional financial risks such as fraud, identity theft, or other malicious activities.
