Coty Ransomware is a Fresh Djvu Clone Targeting Files for Encryption

Our team of malware analysts recently discovered a new ransomware called Coty while examining new malware samples. This ransomware belongs to the Djvu family and has the capability to encrypt data by appending the ".coty" extension to the filenames. Once encrypted, it generates a ransom note named "_readme.txt".

As part of its encryption process, Coty renames files by adding the ".coty" extension to their original names, such as "1.jpg" becoming "1.jpg.coty" and "2.png" becoming "2.png.coty". It is essential to note that Djvu family ransomware is often distributed in combination with information stealers such as RedLine and Vidar.

The ransom note left behind by the attackers demands payment for the decryption software and a unique key to unlock the files. The cost for the software is $980, but the attackers offer a 50% discount if payment is made within 72 hours of the attack, reducing the price to $490.

The attackers emphasize that payment is the only way for the victims to recover their files. To prove that they have the ability to decrypt files, the attackers offer to decrypt one file for free. The ransom note provides two email addresses, support@freshmail.top and datarestorehelp@airmail.cc, for victims to contact the attackers.
