What is ConfigInput Mac Adware?

While conducting an examination of newly submitted files, our research team came across an application known as ConfigInput. Upon thorough analysis, we determined that ConfigInput falls under the category of advertising-supported software, commonly referred to as adware, and it belongs to the AdLoad malware family. The primary purpose of ConfigInput is to generate revenue for its developers by inundating users with advertisements.

Adware, like ConfigInput, operates by displaying ads on various websites and interfaces. These third-party graphical contents often promote online scams, untrustworthy or harmful software, and even malware. Clicking on some of these ads may result in stealthy downloads or installations of malicious content.

It is important to note that while legitimate products and services might appear through these advertisements, they are unlikely to be endorsed by their developers or official parties. More often than not, scammers exploit affiliate programs associated with the ad content to gain illegitimate commissions.

Depending on certain conditions, such as an incompatible browser or system, or specific websites not being visited, the ad campaigns by advertising-supported software like ConfigInput may not be as intrusive. However, the mere presence of ConfigInput on a system poses a threat to both device and user safety.

Furthermore, it is common for AdLoad applications to possess browser-hijacking capabilities, but our analysis of ConfigInput did not reveal any such behavior.

Beyond its intrusive ad displays, ConfigInput likely engages in the collection of sensitive user data. This targeted information may encompass browsing and search engine histories, Internet cookies, login credentials, credit card numbers, and more. The data collected by ConfigInput may be shared with or sold to third parties, potentially including cybercriminals.

How Can Adware Affect Your Online Safety and Privacy?

Adware can significantly impact your online safety and privacy in various ways. Despite its seemingly harmless nature compared to more aggressive malware, adware poses significant risks to users. Here's how adware can affect your online safety and privacy:

  • Unwanted Advertisements: Adware bombards users with intrusive and annoying advertisements, disrupting the browsing experience and potentially leading to accidental clicks on malicious ads, which could trigger malware installations or lead to phishing scams.
  • Malicious Redirects: Adware may redirect users to malicious websites hosting malware or promoting fraudulent schemes, putting users at risk of falling victim to scams, phishing attacks, or downloading harmful software.
  • Data Collection: Many adware applications track users' online activities, including browsing habits, search queries, and websites visited. This data is often collected without users' consent and used for targeted advertising or even sold to third parties, compromising user privacy.
  • Browsing Interference: Adware can modify browser settings, inject unwanted toolbars, and change the default search engine, altering the user's browsing experience and making it difficult to revert to preferred settings.
  • Browser Hijacking: Some adware variants engage in browser hijacking, redirecting users to specific search engines or websites, which may lead to unsafe destinations or manipulated search results.
  • Performance Issues: Adware can consume system resources and slow down your device's performance, leading to a sluggish computer and frustrating user experience.
