Brns ransomware is yet another strain of file-encrypting malware that joins the countless numbers of Djvu family ransomware clones.
The new strain behaves like all of its brethren - it encrypts non-essential files on the victim system, including documents, archives, media and database files. Once encrypted, the files receive the ".brns" extension appended past their original one. This means that a file previously named "essay.docx" will turn into "essay.docx.brns" once it has been encrypted by the ransomware.
The ransom note is dropped inside a plain text file, following the naming convention used by all Djvu clones, with the file named "_readme.txt". The ransom demand is the same as the one used by all recent Djvu clones - $490 if the ransom is paid within 72 hours. Beyond this time frame, the criminals operating the Brns ransomware expect payment of $980 for an alleged decryptor.
Of course, dealing with cybercriminals is never a smart move and your best bet remains to restore your lost files using an offline backup.
