Watch Out for the 'Apple Invoice' Scam
A new scam is distributed through malicious spam emails online. This time, the scammers are trying to impersonate Apple.
The scam uses a simple and familiar setup. The victim receives a malicious email that contains a fake "invoice" and claims that the user ordered a pair of expensive Apple earbud headphones and will be charged $250 for the purchase.
Of course, since this is a scam, the victim never ordered the item. The scammers have provided a fake "support" phone number that scam victims can call when they panic over the unexpected $250 charge.
The scam operators who will be on the other end of that phone line can perform all sorts of malicious activities if the victim does dial the number. They could extract personal information from the victim, including banking information, under the pretense of needing this information to "cancel" the payment.
Remember to be extra careful when opening unsolicited emails in your inbox and be particularly careful with emails that may be impersonating well-known companies such as Apple in this particular case.
