Beware of Active Land Rogue Browser Extension
During our inspection of questionable websites, our team came across the Active Land browser extension, which is promoted as a convenient tool for sports-related content. However, upon further analysis, we discovered that Active Land is a browser hijacker. By changing browser settings, it promotes the finddbest.co fake search engine through redirects.
When a browser hijacker like Active Land is installed, it alters browser settings, such as default search engines, homepages, and new browser tab/window URLs. As a result, every search query entered into the URL bar or any new browser tabs/windows opened will redirect the user to the finddbest.co site.
Fake search engines are not known for their ability to provide accurate search results, so they often redirect users to legitimate ones. In the case of finddbest.co, it currently redirects users to the Bing search engine. However, it is essential to note that this could change based on factors like user geolocation.
Moreover, browser hijacking software commonly employs persistence techniques, and Active Land is no exception.
In addition, Active Land may potentially collect users' browsing activity, as is typical with browser hijackers. The information collected may include visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, IP addresses, Internet cookies, personally identifiable details, usernames/passwords, financial data, and more. This information could be shared with or sold to third-parties.
Why Should You Always Avoid Fake Search Engines?
Fake search engines should be avoided because they are often used to trick users into visiting malicious websites or downloading malware. These search engines may also collect and share users' personal information with third parties, compromising their privacy and security.
In addition, fake search engines often provide poor search results, which can waste users' time and make it difficult to find the information they need. Therefore, it is recommended to stick to well-known and reputable search engines and avoid clicking on suspicious links or installing unknown browser extensions.
