MobileInter Online Skimming Campaign Goes After Mobile Users
Online skimming campaigns have been gaining popularity eversince the MageCart group launched one of the largest attacks of this sort. One of the latest skimming campaigns to grab the attention of cybersecurity researchers is dubbed MobileInter. While traditional online skimmers target desktop users, the MobileInter hackers are focusing on mobile devices exclusively. This trend is likely to continue, as more and more users tend to do their shopping through smartphones or tablets.
Of course, the criminals are aiming to steal sensitive data from their victims – primarily login details and payment information. Since the attack is executed via compromised websites, users might have no idea that their data is being stolen – to them, the website looks safe and legitimate. These attacks are exceptionally dangerous, as the criminals are not leveraging a phishing page or a fake website – their malicious script is hosted on a legitimate online payment page.
However, targeting mobile users is not the only innovation that MobileInter has introduced. The criminals have also adopted new tricks to hide the malicious code – on some of the infected hosts, it was hidden inside maliciously modified images. The MobileInter attacks share infrastructure with the MageCart group and several other groups carrying out the same attacks. It seems that online skimming campaigns have attracted a lot of cybercriminals, and we might be seeing just the start of their growth.
To stay safe from the MobileInter attack and similar campaigns, you should stick to browsing reputable websites and not low-quality online vendors who may not have taken appropriate measures to protect their network and the data of their customers.
