How to Fix a Slow Chrome Browser

Browsers these days have gone a long way from what they used to be a decade ago. Hardware requirements have shifted, new technologies have sped things up in some parts and made them more cumbersome and resource-intensive as others.

It's not an uncommon issue for users to have to deal with a slow and not very responsive browsing experience, regardless of their chosen browser. This article will give you some ideas about how to make sure your Chrome browser runs like a well-oiled machine.

Here are a few ideas you can try to improve your Chrome performance!

1. Check your connection speed

First things first - use one of the popular websites that offer connection speed test services. If your connection test comes up with unusually slow results, the issue is not with your Chrome browser.
Alternatively, you can try a different browser - if web pages load as slowly in it as they do in Chrome, the issue is very likely with your ISP, your connection or your hardware, not with the browser.

2. Mind the number of open tabs

Chrome is a great platform, but it has its limitations. A lot of people like to keep a very large number of tabs open and hardly ever close old ones, just in case they "need them later". Bookmarks exist for a reason and a browser with several dozen open tabs can quickly bog down performance, both inside the browser and system-wide.

Where the point where tabs become a burden depends a lot on your hardware, primarily on the amount of RAM you have on your system. As a general rule of thumb, attempt to keep opened tabs to a minimum, to minimize the browser's memory footprint and improve performance.

3. Check how many active extensions and Chrome apps you have

The Chrome Web Store is an endless trove of useful or simply curious additions for your browser. However, people often tend to get a little carried away when installing new extensions, or often install an extension that they don't get much use out of, with the extension still active.

Navigate to Chrome's menu, click Settings and then Extensions in the menu on the left. This will bring up the list of currently installed extensions and Chrome apps. If you see a large number of them in there, to the point where you have a scroll bar to see them all, this might well be the reason why your browser is slow.

You can try disabling them in batches or simply removing the extensions you don't intend to use again. Cutting down on the number of active and installed extensions and Chrome apps can have a considerable impact on your browser's performance.
