Cookies - Uses and How to Clean

Cookies are small chunks of data, stored in files, that are used by both your browser of choice and the websites you visit. There is a wide range of functions that cookies can perform, ranging from saving your username for a website, to more unpleasant and malicious uses such as tracking your online behavior and activity.

Cookies are generally represented by very small plain text files that are handled, stored, and used by your browser of choice. No matter whether you use Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or some other browser, it will perform more or less the same tasks when it comes to reading and storing cookies.

The legitimate functionality of cookies used on regular websites can be quite useful and store user preference on configurable pages, as well as user information that can be used for much faster and more convenient login. If you often visit a website that has username and password login fields, and your username is automatically filled in every time you visit, this is very likely done by using a cookie stored on your system.

Sadly, there are also malicious cookies used on less reputable websites. Those are often pages that also serve advertising from rogue ad networks and could potentially lead you to pages that host malware. This sort of cookie is used to track your activity online and then potentially resell the data collected about user browsing habits to third parties.

If you are worried you might have similar cookies on your system, you might want to flush all cookies. Every browser has a different way of doing this and the respective menu to do it.

On Chrome, you need to open the browser, then press the Control, Shift and Delete keys together at the same time. This will bring up the "Clear browsing data" menu. If you are only clearing cookies, untick all other boxes and leave just "Cookies and other site data" ticked. Finally, click the "Clear data" button to finish the operation.

On Microsoft Edge, open the browser, select "Settings" in the browser menu, then "Privacy, search and services" in the left menu bar. On the right, find the section labeled "Clear browsing data" and click the "Choose what to clear" button. Just like with Chrome, only leave "Cookies and other site data" ticked and click "Clear now". This will take care of clearing any cookies stored on your system in the two most widely used browsers at present.
