What is the '2022 FIFA Lottery Award' Scam?

computer scam

The "2002 FIFA lottery award" scam is a somewhat entertaining but also potentially dangerous scam that is currently being distributed through malicious spam emails.

The scam uses a very simple and basic setup. Scam victims are sent a very brief email with a malicious attachment. The full text of the scam email goes as follows:

Dear WINNER, You have been selected as a winner in the 2022 FIFA Lottery Award. Find attached with more details.

QATAR 2022 WORLD-CUP LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE.

This brief text is accompanied by a malicious attachment that shows up as an Adobe PDF file.

The malicious PDF lists a hilarious and obviously fake reward of almost $3 million waiting for the victim. To receive it, the victim is expected to provide their full name, address, occupation, age and phone number.

Naturally, there is no reward here, but the information collected by the criminals running the scam may be abused in various ways, ranging from being re-sold to third parties and advertising networks, to being used for impersonation or fraud.

Be very careful with ransom unsolicited emails in your inbox and exercise common sense when you see the latest free expensive iPhone or million-dollar award show up.
