Vultur Android Malware Found on the Google Play Store

80% Of Retail Apps Leak Personal Data

Cybercriminals are gradually switching from Windows-oriented malware to implants that target smartphones using the Android operating system. One of the latest malware samples that Android users need to be wary of is called Vultur. The Vultur Android Malware is being spread through fake applications that were available for download on multiple popular services hosting Android apps. In fact, the Vultur Android Malware was also found on the official Google Play Store, concealed under the name 'Protection Guard.' Allegedly, over 5,000 users had made a mistake to install the fake app, effectively running the Vultur Android Malware on their device.

The majority of the victims are located in Western European countries like Italy, Australia, and Spain. The criminals are using the implant to spy on users and to exfiltrate data and credentials related to crypto wallets and financial apps.

Vultur Android Malware Streams the Victim's Screen

The Vultur Android Malware is different from other Android threats that aim to harvest login credentials for banking apps. Instead of using a long list of overlays to phish for the user's credentials, the criminals are using a much more sophisticated method. Just like the UBEL Android Malware, these crooks aiming to gain remote access to the compromised device. They are doing this by using a Virtual Network Computing (VNC) service to view the infected devices remotely. In addition to logging activities of the user, the criminals are also able to simulate clicks and control a wide range of device features.

New threats like the Vultur Android Malware underline the importance of taking the necessary measures to protect your mobile devices against hackers. If you are frequently relying on your Android device to view bank accounts, perform transactions, or work with any sort of currency, then you are more than likely to become the target of a hacking attempt. Use a reputable anti-malware app to prevent intrusions, and also remember to be careful with the files you download. The Vultur Android Malware shows that it is possible for malware to reach the Google Play Store, so no apps there are necessarily safe. Make sure to read reviews, research the apps you download, and be careful for fake copies.
