Netlock Ransomware is a New MedusaLocker Clone

This week a new MedusaLocker variant was spotted in the wild. The new ransomware strain is called Netlock.

The Netlock ransomware encrypts files on the system it gets deployed on and makes them unreadable. Affected file types include media, document, database and archive files. Files essential to Windows are left intact.

Once encrypted, files receive a new extension in the form of the ".netlock" string. This will make a file previously named "photo.jpg" turn into "photo.jpg.netlock" upon encryption.

The ransomware drops its ransom demands inside an HTML file called "how_to_back_files.html" and the lengthy ransom note goes as follows:
