What Does The Nautica Browser Hijacker Do?

browser hijacker

Our researchers recently uncovered the Nautica browser extension, which is a form of malicious software known as a browser hijacker. This type of program alters browser settings, causes redirects, and monitors user activity while browsing the web.

Browser hijackers are notorious for promoting fake search engines by making them the default URL for browsers, as well as their homepage and new tab/window. As a result, when users open a new tab or search via the URL bar they are taken to the promoted website instead of their desired destination.

When tested, Nautica was found to redirect users to Bing's legitimate search engine (bing.com). However, it is possible that this extension could lead people to other fake or genuine search engines depending on various factors such as user geolocation.

Nautica also has techniques in place to make sure it remains persistent on users' systems and cannot be easily removed. Additionally, it has data-tracking capabilities which allow it to collect information such as visited URLs, viewed webpages, searched queries, bookmarks, usernames/passwords, personal details and financial information. This data can then be sold to third-parties for profit.

What settings will browser hijackers commonly change in your browser?

Browser hijackers commonly change the default URL, homepage, and new tab/window settings in a browser. They may also alter other settings such as search engine preferences, security settings, and privacy settings. Those changes usually happen without proper disclosure and explicit user consent, which is what makes browser hijackers problematic.

How can you protect your browser from browser hijackers similar to Nautica?

Browser hijackers commonly change the default URL, homepage, and new tab/window settings in a browser. They may also alter other settings such as search engine preferences, security settings, and privacy settings.

  1. Install a reliable anti-virus and anti-malware program on your computer and keep it up to date.
  2. Make sure your browser is updated to the latest version.
  3. Be careful when downloading software from the internet, as some programs may contain malicious code that can install browser hijackers without your knowledge.
  4. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or pop-ups, as they may lead to malicious websites that can install browser hijackers on your system.
  5. Use a secure web browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, which have built-in security features that can help protect you from malicious websites and downloads.
  6. Change your default search engine to one you trust, such as Google or Bing, so you don’t accidentally end up on a fake search engine website that could be associated with a browser hijacker.
