My Weather Tab Browser Extension

During the examination of deceptive websites, our researchers came across the browser extension known as My Weather Tab. Our investigation unveiled that this extension functions as software that hijacks browsers. Its purpose is to modify browser settings with the intention of promoting the fake search engine myweathertab.xyz through redirections.

Browser hijackers alter browser settings by designating promoted websites as the default search engines, homepages, and URLs for new browser tabs/windows. Consequently, whenever a new tab or window is opened, or a search query is entered into the URL bar, it triggers redirects to the endorsed website. My Weather Tab employs this method as well to promote myweathertab.xyz.

Usually, illegitimate search engines are incapable of delivering authentic search results, so they redirect users to legitimate internet search platforms. At the time of our research, myweathertab.xyz directed users to the Bing search engine (bing.com). However, it's important to note that this redirection might vary, influenced by factors like user location.

Browser-hijacking software frequently employs techniques to ensure its persistence, including blocking access to settings related to removal and reversing any changes made by the user to restore their browser settings.

Furthermore, a common practice among browser hijackers is to monitor users' online activity, and this could also be the case with My Weather Tab. The data of interest could encompass visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, cookies, login credentials, personally identifiable information, financial data, and more. This collected information can then be monetized through its sale to third parties.

What Are Fake Search Engines and Why Should You Avoid Them?

Fake search engines are websites designed to mimic legitimate search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo, but they do not provide genuine search results. Instead, they often serve as a front for malicious activities, potentially compromising your online security and privacy. Here's why you should avoid fake search engines:

  • Misleading Search Results: Fake search engines often display manipulated or irrelevant search results. These results can include sponsored links, ads, and even malicious websites that could lead to phishing scams or malware infections.
  • Malware Distribution: Some fake search engines may host malicious links or content that can infect your computer with malware, such as viruses, ransomware, or spyware.
  • Privacy Concerns: Fake search engines can track your search queries, browsing habits, and personal information, which may then be sold to third parties or used for targeted advertising.
  • Phishing Attacks: Fake search engines can lead to phishing sites designed to steal your sensitive information, such as login credentials, credit card details, or personal data.
  • Browser Hijacking: Certain fake search engines operate as browser hijackers, changing your browser's default settings, homepage, and search engine without your consent. This can lead to a degraded browsing experience and expose you to more risks.
  • Unreliable Content: Fake search engines may not provide accurate or trustworthy information. This can be a problem when you're searching for important or factual information.
