During a routine examination of suspicious websites, our research team came across the KittyTab browser extension. This software is marketed as a tool that showcases cat-themed browser wallpapers. However, our analysis revealed that KittyTab is, in fact, a browser hijacker. It alters browser settings to promote the kittytab.com fake search engine.

Browser hijackers typically modify default search engine, homepage, and new tab/window settings in web browsers. Consequently, when users perform web searches via the URL bar or open new browser tabs/windows, they are redirected to the promoted site.

KittyTab follows the common pattern of browser hijackers by pushing fake search engines. As a result, with this extension installed, users will be redirected to the kittytab.com webpage.

Fake search engines usually lack the capability to generate search results, so they redirect users to legitimate internet search websites. In the case of kittytab.com, it redirects users to the Bing search engine (bing.com). It's worth noting that the redirection destination may vary based on factors like user location.

Another noteworthy aspect is that browser-hijacking software often employs methods to ensure its persistence, making it challenging to remove and preventing users from restoring their browser settings.

Software falling into this category commonly includes data-tracking features, and this may also be the case with KittyTab. The gathered data can encompass visited URLs, viewed pages, search queries, internet cookies, login credentials, personally identifiable information, financial data, and more. This collected information can be monetized by selling it to third parties.
