Jzeq Ransomware Locks Victim Systems

ransomware

Jzeq is a type of ransomware that belongs to the Djvu family. It was identified during an examination of new file samples. Jzeq operates by encrypting files, making them inaccessible, and adding the ".jzeq" extension to their filenames. A ransom note named "_readme.txt" is included with the encrypted files. For example, it changes "1.pg" to "1.jpg.jzeq" and "2.png" to "2.png.jzeq," and so on.

The ransom note aims to reassure the victim by claiming that all files can be recovered. It mentions that a variety of file types, including images, databases, documents, and other critical data, have been strongly encrypted. To regain access to these files, the victim is advised to purchase a decryption tool and a unique key.

The note emphasizes the effectiveness of their software in decrypting the encrypted files. As a guarantee, the attackers offer to decrypt one file from the victim's computer for free, with the condition that the file doesn't contain valuable information.

The ransom cost for obtaining the decryption tools is $980, with a 50% discount available if the victim contacts the attackers within the first 72 hours, reducing the price to $490.

To obtain these tools, the victim is instructed to contact the attackers via the email address support@freshmail.top. An alternative contact email is datarestorehelp@airmail.cc.

How Can You Protect Your Data from Ransomware?

Protecting your data from ransomware is crucial in today's digital landscape. Here are some key steps you can take to safeguard your data:

  • Backup Your Data: Regularly back up your data to an external device or a cloud-based service. Ensure your backups are automated, and test them to make sure they can be easily restored.
  • Keep Software Updated: Ensure your operating system, software, and antivirus programs are up to date. Many ransomware attacks target vulnerabilities in outdated software.
  • Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Use complex and unique passwords for your accounts, and consider using a password manager to help you keep track of them.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Whenever possible, enable 2FA for your accounts. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring you to provide a second authentication method, such as a one-time code sent to your phone.
  • Educate Yourself and Your Team: Educate yourself and your employees about the dangers of phishing emails and how to recognize them. Most ransomware attacks start with a phishing email.
  • Email Security: Employ email filtering and scanning solutions to block malicious attachments and links.
  • Keep Personal and Work Data Separate: Avoid using personal email and devices for work-related matters. Separating personal and work data can help contain a ransomware attack.
  • Network Security: Use firewalls and intrusion detection systems to protect your network. Limit access to critical network resources.
  • Regularly Update Security Software: Ensure that your antivirus and anti-malware software is active and up to date.
