Beware of Gastronomy Tab Rogue Browser Extension

web browser hijacker

Upon assessing the Gastronomy Tab browser extension, our evaluation revealed that it functions as a browser hijacker, promoting a deceptive search engine known as find.hsrcnav.com. Gastronomy Tab takes control of browser settings, altering them without user consent. Typically, users unknowingly download and install applications that lead to browser hijacking.

Once integrated into a web browser, Gastronomy Tab modifies specific settings, including the default search engine, homepage, and new tab page. It replaces them with a counterfeit search engine named find.hsrcnav.com. When users perform searches using this fraudulent search engine, they are subsequently redirected to bing.com, where search results from Bing are displayed.

While the search results themselves originate from Bing, a legitimate search engine, it is important to highlight that Gastronomy Tab is responsible for hijacking the user's browsing experience and manipulating its functionality.

Furthermore, it is crucial to note that fake search engines and browser hijackers have the potential to collect and track user data, encompassing browsing patterns, search queries, and personal information. This data can be misused or sold to third parties, compromising user privacy and exposing them to risks such as identity theft or targeted advertising.

Removing certain browser hijackers manually can prove challenging. They may leave behind residual files, alter system configurations, or possess the ability to reinstall themselves, making it arduous for users to completely eradicate them.

How Can Rogue Extensions and Browser Hijackers Compromise Your Online Security?

Rogue extensions and browser hijackers can compromise your online security in several ways:

Unauthorized data collection: Rogue extensions and browser hijackers may collect your browsing habits, search queries, and personal information without your knowledge or consent. This sensitive data can be used for targeted advertising, identity theft, or sold to third parties, jeopardizing your privacy and online security.

Misleading search results: Browser hijackers often manipulate search results to display misleading or potentially malicious links. This can lead you to click on unsafe websites, phishing scams, or malware-infected pages, exposing your system to security threats.

Installation of additional malware: Browser hijackers can serve as a gateway for other malicious software. They may facilitate the installation of adware, spyware, ransomware, or other types of malware onto your system, causing significant harm to your online security and compromising the integrity of your data.

Modification of browser settings: Rogue extensions and browser hijackers alter browser settings such as the default search engine, homepage, or new tab page. These modifications can redirect you to fake search engines, phishing sites, or websites loaded with malicious content. Such changes undermine your ability to control and trust your browser's behavior, making you more susceptible to security risks.
