What is the Fit Video Display PUP?

pop-up warning

Fit Video Display is a browser extension for Chrome. It has a listing on the Chrome web store but is also commonly distributed using bundle installers.

The extension can change the color temperature, saturation, hue, contrast and other parameters of a video image in your browser. We did tests using the extension in an instance of Chrome and found that it does exactly what it claims to do on its Chrome web store page and can make all those changes to videos on streaming websites.

The catch is, in some cases, the extension is installed silently, through bundle installers, and its presence in the bundle and install process is not properly disclosed to the user. This sort of behavior, with applications installing "quietly" and without receiving explicit consent on part of the user, is what puts similar applications and software into the "potentially unwanted programs" category.

The fact that Fit Video Display asks for permissions to read and change data on all websites you visit also means that this functionality could potentially be misused to inject ads into pages you browse.

If you ended up with Fit Video Display in your Chrome browser by accident or you are not sure how it got there, removal is very easy. The extension can be removed by simply opening  chrome://extensions/ and using the Remove button.
